What Is A Phobia?
Many people have phobias of different things. According to the American Psychiatric Association, a phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation. Phobias arise when a person feels as though they can be harmed buy doing a certain thing. Symptoms of phobias are dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, sense of unreality, and fear of dying. There are three types of phobias. One would be social phobias which is the fear of social situations. Second Agoraphobia which is the fear of being trapped in an inescapable place or situation and Specific phobia which is fear of a specific object (such as bridges). There are four major types of specific phobias. The first one would be the natural environment, the second one animals, the third one medical, and the fourth one situational. There is no treatment to 100% cure phobias but we can do things to build our tolerance to them such as expose our self to them. Believe it or not scientists say the more you are exposed to objects you fear the less you'll fear them. Another type of exposure treatment is flooding, in which the patient is confronted by the fear object for an extended length of time without the opportunity to escape. The third treatment is called counter-conditioning. In this method, the patient is taught a new response to the fear object.
